Many studies have been done on the effects of guided meditation and most of these studies have proven its effectiveness on calming a person’s mind and body. Guided meditation is not a new exercise and has been around for many years but since the recent notice of stressful and time consuming jobs and lives, many people have turned to it to help relieve their stress and to instruct them on how to deal with straining situations. Guided meditation and private meditation were developed in the Buddhist community about 2,500 years ago and have been used ever since. The Dalai Lama stands by meditation by referring to it as a way that human beings express their ability to avoid suffering and find their own personal happiness. The Dalai Lama met with these scientists in a number of sessions in which they interviewed him and presented their research on the subject of guided meditation. He offered his opinions on the subject from his Buddhist point of view but also engaged in the scientists’ factual understanding of meditation and its effects. Although the Dalai Lama stands by his completely spiritual and meditative practices, he cooperated with the scientists and showed them that he understands the importance of science and research on the subject.

Guided meditation was shown to be effective at calming a person’s inner thoughts and sometimes relieving ailments such as migraines. By attempting to achieve the three levels of guided mediation, many people have found their limit of difficulty and what they need to work on to make their meditative session more intense. The meditating person must first work to achieve an external focus during a guided meditation session. This is the most basic type of meditation and the easiest form to achieve. In the external focus session, the person must concentrate on an object in the room while still paying close attention to his or her own body. The internal focus is a form of guided meditation that is found to be a little more challenging. In this form of meditation, the person must focus on occupying the mind with a mantra or another small but non-thinking task while concentrating solely on removing thoughts from the brain and relaxing the body. The unfocused form of guided meditation is the most challenging form and it is the form where the person meditating can go the deepest into the meditative state. In this state of meditation, the person focuses on nothing and keeps the mind completely silent.

Meditation has been used in various forms by people all around the world for thousands of years. Visualization is not necessarily a meditation technique, but it can be very effective when used in a meditative state. Your mind is already very relaxed and empty – and open to suggestion.

In the same way that you can utilize your voice, so, perhaps more powerfully, you can use your imagination. The imagination can stimulate emotions, and these can register new attitudes in the mind. It can be a direct communication with the deeper levels of the mind and can provide a powerful influence for improvements in your attitudes, behavior patterns and overall confidence.

Visualization requires that you imagine yourself in a particular situation, behaving, reacting and looking as you would wish to do at an interview, an important meeting, a social gathering, a one-to-one situation, or perhaps a sporting event (or really any situation that you specifically want to do well in).

Imagine what that will mean for you, your reactions, the reactions of those around you and, importantly, feel all the good feelings that will be there when this happens in reality.

It is like playing a video of the event, on that screen on the inside of the forehead, the mind\’s eye, from the beginning of the situation through to the perfect outcome for you. Should any doubts or negative images creep into your \”video\”, push them away and replace them with positive ones. Keep this realistic, and base it upon real information from your past.

Once you are happy with the images you are seeing, note the way you are standing and presenting yourself. Then allow yourself to \”climb aboard\”, and view the scene from inside your imagined self. Now you can get in touch with the feelings and attitudes that make the event successful.

The best time to do this is when relaxed mentally and physically – during meditation is the perfect time. Teach yourself to expect new, positive outcomes. This can be combined with affirmations, to make it doubly effective.

Meditation doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it’s often the simpler methods of meditating that are the most effective as you don’t have to concentrate on what you’re doing as much. Here are some simple meditation techniques that you can start straight away.

Breathing meditation

This is one of the simplest techniques but don’t let that fool you. It’s also one of the most effective techniques you can use to take yourself into a meditative state. You can start by simply noticing your breathing. Notice the air as it enters your nostrils and makes its way down your windpipe to your lungs. Is it warm or cool? Is there a “taste” to the air? How does its journey feel? Are you invigorated when you fill your lungs with air? There are more advanced breathing meditations available but this will definitely get you started.

Walking meditation

Another simple technique that is often overlooked for that very reason. Most people prefer to carry out their walking meditation in somewhere quiet such as a park or other green outdoor space but you can use somewhere busier if that’s what you prefer or if that’s the only thing available. Notice the feelings that go through your body as you walk: the ground below your feet, the air moving past you, the feel good factor that comes with any form of physical exercise. Then move on to noticing your surroundings. A lot of people find that by paying attention their experience is heightened and they notice things that would have escaped them or passed them by if they weren’t actively concentrating on the experience. Almost as though they were taking part in a television show with the colors, brightness and sound all turned up fully.

When you first start to meditate, you should always remind yourself that children are some of the most successful meditators in this technique, because of their playful and innocent attitude towards meditation.
